France - La Fee Verte or The Green Fairy (Absinthe) was famously prohibited in 1915. Since 1988 Absinthe has been legal in France provided that it is not labeled Absinthe but is branded spiritueux à base de plantes dabsinthe. France additionally regulates the substance fenchone that is present in fennel so beverages must consist of 5mg/liter or less of fenchone. Many distillers make low fenchone Absinthes especially for the French market.
